The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.
-Dorothy Nevill

All great truths begin as blasphemies.

We are here on Earth to do good to others. What the others are here for, I don't know. --W.H. Auden

While you weren't listening, all our love songs became sad songs.

Your absence has gone through me like a needle; everything I do is stitched with its color. - W.S. Merwin

No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. ~ Henry Adams

Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.

"Out beyond ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing there is a field. I'll meet you there."
- Rumi

You remember and dwell on all the things you've lost and ignore all the things you haven't. Because your scars are like stars. Yet the night stays perfectly black.

A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.

When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty. It may not sound nice to some bunch of little old ladies at an afternoon tea party, but it helps my soldiers to remember. You can't run an army without profanity; and it has to be eloquent profanity. An army without profanity couldn't fight its way out of a piss-soaked paper bag. ... As for the types of comments I make, sometimes I just, By God, get carried away with my own eloquence.
-George Patton

A moral being is one who is capable of comparing his past and future actions or motives, and of approving or disapproving of them.

A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time, and a courageous person afterward.

No one should have to dance backward all of their lives.

Yet, no matter how accurately you write it or mumble it under your breath, it won't change the way things stand between you. A poem, let alone a paragraph, is not a magic spell. And the only people who can write those stay in padded rooms, listening to music no one's ever played.

Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.

Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault.
-Oscar Wilde

Every improvement in communication makes the bore more terrible.
- Frank Moore Colby

And you keep whispering the same story to yourself "I'll be unhappy now because that'll make me happy later. Because that's how a story works." So your happiness will always happen later, never now. Life isn't a story. Life is chaos.

"When you trust your point of view, that's when you start taking pictures." - Annie Leibovitz

Silence is often misinterpreted, but never misquoted.

When a woman behaves like a man, why doesn't she behave like a nice man? ~Edith Evans

A university is what a college becomes when the faculty loses interest in students.

You constantly look for a sign and when it's given to you and you don't like the answer, you call it a coincidence. There are no coincidences.

"Who has never killed an hour? Not casually or without thought, but carefully: a premeditated murder of minutes. The violence comes from a combination of giving up, not caring, and a resignation that getting past it is all you can hope to accomplish. So you kill the hour. You do not work, you do not read, you do not daydream. If you sleep it is not because you need to sleep. And when at last it is over, there is no evidence: no weapon, no blood, and no body. The only clue might be the shadows beneath your eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of your mouth indicating something has been suffered, that in the privacy of your life you have lost something and the loss is too empty to share."
--Mark Z. Danielewski

In case you touch me by accident. In case you don't on purpose. More hope than heaven (more sadness than soil).

"Call no man foe, but never love a stranger." - Stella Benson

You could ink yourself until everyone knows all the things you love. You could wear uniforms that gave you all the authority in the world. Lose weight until there was nothing left. Paint the face. Suck in your gut.
But in the dark, stripped down to your bones, all that remains is you.

Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the heart can love. - Zelda Fitzgerald

You think you’re waiting for help. For someone to tell you what the right thing to do is. Even though, at the back of your mind, you already know what that is. So all you’re really waiting for, is a time when you’re forced to do it.

"To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be."
Anna Louise Strong

It's when you hold eye contact for that second too long or maybe the way you laugh. It sets off a flash and our memories take a picture of who we are at that point when we first know "This is love." And we clutch that picture to our hearts because we expect each other to always be the people in that picture. But people change. People aren't pictures. And you can either take a new picture or throw the old one away.

So you look for patterns because that's what humans do to try and make sense of things. In hope of some divine order. And you look in movies and songs and the things that you read for symbols, points and swirls that match your own. But the only real pattern there is, is the one you make when you hold up a mirror. And reflect.

To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our human loneliness is cause enough. But is a hard quest worth making to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily the person one desires to be.

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. “I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing.” -Neil Gaiman

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.'"
-Jim Jarmusch

When Sade was not considered an author, what was the status of his papers? Simply rolls of paper onto which he ceaselessly uncoilded his fantasies during his imprisonment.

Properly speaking, there is no such thing as revenge. Revenge is an act which you want to commit when you are powerless and because you are powerless: as soon as the sense of impotence is removed, the desire evaporates also.

I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, 'I'm going to mop the floor with your face.' I said, 'You'll be sorry.' He said, 'Oh, yeah? Why?' I said, 'Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well.'

I wanted to write about the moment when your addictions no longer hide the truth from you. When your whole life breaks down. That's the moment when you have to somehow choose what your life is going to be about. Doping yourself with sex or drugs or food, or choosing something like writing, body building, gardening. True, in a way this is trading one compulsive behavior for another, but at least with the new one, you're choosing it.

Funny, but all my former junkie friends are either fervent Christians or triathletes. Nothing in half measures.

There is a hurricane headed for eastern Canada, right now. Hurricane Noel. Hurricanes always die down before they reach Halifax. But I wish I were back there anyway. Even died down, it means wind and leaves and dark clouds. I haven't talked to my brother Adrian since I left home. We email back and forth on Facebook, and I showed him the final draft of my new novel, which is about him. But I haven't heard his voice in months. Now there's a hurricane coming. If I were back in Halifax now, I would fill my backpack with beer, and I would put on a warm jacket, and I would call my brother up.

The trick to finding a happy ending is knowing where to stop the story.

Anguish and fear have never been so much fun.

The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.

Feeling about as vain and sexy as an over-the-hill, overweight, overeducated, yet under-employed, naked man with a pair of cola bottle bottoms for eyeglasses and an insignificant, no matter how erect, protrusion of flesh between the legs possibly can, I decided to write. Did I mention hairy?

I went to bed that night in the lonely hotel room. I could not sleep, and then, in the gray light between darkness and dawn, the words came to me line by line, stanza by stanza. I lay perfectly still, and the words came sweeping on with the rhythm of marching feet, pauseless, resistless. I saw the long line swinging into place before my eyes. I heard the voice of a nation speaking through my lips.

I saw you speak this week at UK. You said "the children the world almost break become the adults who save it". That is my secret. Thank you for giving it voice. I did not break. I am trying one at a time.

But still. Still bless me anyway. I want more life. I can't help myself. I do. I've lived through such terrible times and there are people who live through much worse. But you see them living anyway. When they're more spirit than body, more sores than skin, when they're burned and in agony, when flies lay eggs in the corners of the eyes of their children - they live. Death usually has to take life away. I don't know if that's just the animal. I don't know if it's not braver to die, but I recognize the habit; the addiction to being alive. So we live past hope. If I can find hope anywhere, that's it, that's the best I can do. It's so much not enough. It's so inadequate. But still bless me anyway. I want more life. “Ordinary… the kind of dangerous, beautiful ordinary that you just can’t leave alone.Like an angel from the underworld or maybe a devil from paradise.”

"I'm not smart. I'm not pretty. I'm not even talented. I'm not anything special. I just happen to be able to trick people into believing I am."

It is better, I think, to grab at the stars than to sit flustered because you know you cannot reach them...At least he who reaches will get a good stretch, a good veiw, and perhaps even a low-hanging apple for his efforts.

I’m just like a devil
You just like a witch
You only like me cause I can scratch your itch
I’m too much a bastard
Your too much like a bitch

physician, heal thyself.

"I exist!," cried the man and the universe replied, "who are you?"

She was so tough she rolled her own tampons

"Just because it says 'she', doesn't mean it's about a girl."

If wishes were fishes, baby, we'd live by the sea.All alone, just you and me.

"I waited, waited for the Lord; who bent down and heard my cry, drew me out of the pit of destruction,...set my feet upon rock, steadied my steps, and put a new song in my mouth, a hymn to our God. Many shall look on in awe and trust in the Lord."

"Who is your God that saves all and saves none?!"

They laugh at you because you're different, you laugh at them cause they're all the same. I laugh at you because you wont stop using that fucking quote!!!

"Between the idea and the reality
Between the motion and the act
Between the conception and the creation
Between the desire and the spasm
Between the everything falls the shadow
This is the way the world ends"

Why live in the world when you can live in your head.

"All the fruits you had set your hearts on have failed you;
gone forever, never to return, is your life of magnificence & ease."

"Take a shot from every angle, I'd have shot you down, I'd have made you look fucking beautiful"

No artist is normal; if he were, he wouldn't be an artist. Normal men don't create works of art. They eat, sleep, hold down routine jobs and die. You are hypersensitive to life and nature;that's why you are able to interpret the rest of us.

Does this elevator go straight to hell or do I switch in the lobby?

There are no stupid questions.
Just a bunch of inquisitive idiots.

I envy people who drink. At least they have something to blame everything on. -Oscar Levant (1906 - 1972)

As for me my love, I am watercolor... I wash off

Time is a great healer..... Unless it's a rash, then you're better off with ointment.

It's ugly. But it works.

Comfort the disturbed, disturb the comfortable.

"Do not weep; do not wax indignant. Understand." Baruch Spinoza (1632 - 1677)

"curiosity was framed....ignorance killed the cat"

No doubt I savored the taste of independence. But it wasn't so much changing the world as becoming a part of it that drove my ambitions.

The lesson here is that dreams inevitably lead to hideous implosions

Innocence of the art is excusable; the ignorance of it is not.

"I have a huge, active imagination, [and] I think I'm really scared of being alone; because ifI'm left to my own devices, I'll just turn into a madwoman."-- Claire Danes

If you can't laugh at you, at least I can.

"I think we should be careful what we do in the future. Because I'm pretty sure elephants never forget" -- Erica Hamby

Make it idiot-proof and they'll build a better idiot.

"I've got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it."

“I know what I know and I talk what I talk! And if that’s wrong then that’s just too bad. The airplane rides are three dollars, cash!”

Ernest Hemingway once wrote, "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part.

:Mouthful of Beer and a Mind full of Hate:

"All that we call human history: money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery - is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy."

An Optimist is someone whom laughs to forget,
a Pessimist is someone whom forgets to laugh!
